A reported security incident at Berkner High School in Richardson, Texas, has prompted concern among students, parents and staff, with reports circulating about a possible shooting and a lockdown at the campus.
Berkner High School and STEM Academy is located at 1600 E. Spring Valley Road in Richardson and is part of Richardson Independent School District (RISD).
At the time of writing, however, there is no reliable official confirmation that a shooting occurred at Berkner High School today. Searches of current Richardson ISD information did not identify an official announcement confirming a shooting at the school. Consequently, claims describing the incident as an active shooting should be treated as unverified until police or school officials provide confirmation.
A lockdown or other security protocol does not necessarily mean that shots have been fired. Richardson ISD explains that campuses may temporarily enter a safety protocol while administrators and law-enforcement partners investigate a potential threat. The district says its priority is to identify and mitigate threats and then communicate accurate information to parents.
Parents are advised not to rush to the school during an active lockdown or security protocol. According to RISD’s safety guidance, parents may not be permitted to enter or pick up students while a campus is secured, and arriving at the scene can interfere with emergency operations.
Berkner has experienced security incidents in the past. In May 2022, Richardson police responded after receiving a report of a person apparently carrying a weapon near the school. A student was subsequently arrested, and authorities reported finding weapons in the student’s vehicle. No shooting was reported in that incident.
The earlier incident demonstrates why reports of a possible weapon or shooting can result in an immediate police response and lockdown, even before authorities establish whether there is an actual continuing threat.
